Orthobiologics are substances that orthopedic surgeons use to help injuries heal more quickly. They are used to improve the healing of broken bones and injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These products are often made from substances that are naturally found in your body. When they are used in higher concentrations, they may help speed up the healing process.
Dr. Mark Fox, DMOS Interventional Physiatrist, Non-surgical Sports Injury specialist, started his medical education pursuit here in Iowa. He received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Iowa and Doctorate of Medicine from the Carver College of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine internship at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. After completing his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Dr. Fox was a Sports Medicine fellow at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Dr. Fox has a wealth of experience in the field of sports medicine and has worked for professional sports teams in the NBA, NHL, and MLB. His practice focuses on Interventional Physiatry and specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) to help patients function better in the world utilizing conservative measures.
His background in care at recreational and professional levels of sport has prepared him to help athletes of all kinds. Dr. Fox enjoys being active and helping others achieve their athletic goals.

Grateful to have Dr. Ryan Nielsen talk about the critical role an orthopedic trauma surgeon plays when complex injuries happen. Learn how a fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeon works, the approach, treatment, and success of this vital role.
Dr. Ryan C Nielsen received his medical degree from Des Moines University and completed an Orthopedic Surgery Residency in Detroit, Michigan. After residency, Dr. Nielsen went on to the Reno Orthopaedic Clinic to complete an Orthopaedic Traumatology Fellowship before returning to Iowa.
Dr. Nielsen's practice focuses predominantly on trauma surgery and some general orthopedics and joint replacement surgery. His interest and specialty training in trauma include the treatment of adult and pediatric fractures, polytraumatic injuries, pelvis, acetabular fractures, periarticular fractures, malunion, nonunion, and surgical treatment of musculoskeletal infections.
Often seeing patients at their worst after an accident, Dr. Nielsen enjoys jointly formulating a treatment plan with his patients' goals in mind, helping to promote a safe recovery and return to activity. Dr. Nielsen has made contributions to local and international communities during volunteer work and surgical missions overseas to Tanzania and Uganda. He is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Health Volunteers Overseas.

Nerve pain, discectomy, laminectomy, degenerative disc disease, and how patients are positioned for back surgery. If you have had a question about the lower back, chances are Dr. Nelson answers it in this episode.
Dr. Nelson joined DMOS Orthopaedic Centers in 1994 after completing his fellowship training to treat spinal injuries and disorders. Since joining DMOS, Dr. Nelson has built an extensive practice involving treating cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) injuries and conditions. Disk herniation, vertebral misalignments, and spinal trauma are also areas of Dr. Nelson's orthopedic practice. He has also published scientific papers concerning spinal disorders and injuries. Please note, patients should see their primary care doctor, who will determine if a spine surgery consultation with Dr. Nelson is appropriate. In addition to spinal conditions and injuries, Dr. Nelson also has extensive experience with general orthopedics trauma and care.
Outside of his professional interests, Dr. Nelson leads a very active lifestyle, enjoying waterskiing, hunting, snow skiing, and biking with his family. He also enjoys farming on a local family farm.

Dr. Cook chose orthopedics due to the excellent care he received while on the field as an athlete himself, as he played football for the University of Colorado, NFL Europe, and New Orleans Saints. His primary mission is to help patients maximize their function through surgical and non-surgical means. He prioritizes ensuring his patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options and have all their questions answered.

Meniscus tears are among the most common knee injuries. Athletes, particularly those who play contact sports, are at risk for meniscus tears. However, anyone at any age can tear a meniscus.
Dr. Ian Lin joined DMOS Orthopaedic Centers in 1997 after completing his education at Grinnell College and the University of Iowa Medical School.
Dr. Lin sees patients with a wide variety of conditions ranging from total joint replacements to superficial injuries. He has built his extensive practice based out of the DMOS Des Moines location and enjoys working with patients of all age groups.
Outside of practice, Dr. Lin coaches spring and fall baseball for a local area high school. He also enjoys spending his time in active outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, fishing, golfing, and above all – spending time with his wife and five children.

In this episode of Joint Effort, Sports Medicine and Knee Surgeon, Matthew DeWall talks about the wear and tear on existing joint replacements, how to determine if a prosthesis is starting to erode, and solutions if the prosthesis fails. He also talks about all the factors that go into making this big decision with patients.
Total knee replacement is one of the most successful procedures in all of medicine. In the vast majority of cases, it enables people to live more prosperous, more active lives free of chronic knee pain.
Over time, however, a knee replacement may fail for a variety of reasons. When this occurs, your knee can become painful and swollen. It may also feel stiff or unstable, making it difficult to perform your everyday activities.
Dr. DeWall specializes in sports medicine of the knee and hip. He is highly skilled in all aspects of knee surgery, including partial joint, total joint replacement, and arthroscopic surgery. He has also performed hundreds of total hip replacements. Dr. DeWall is an expert in Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction, knee arthritis and osteoarthritis, and meniscal repair. He uses the latest techniques and technology to perform simple and more complex hip replacement procedures. Dr. DeWall has published both textbook chapters and scientific journal articles on all of his research with respect to the knee and hip.
